“Imagine that you have nothing. No food. No shelter. Your health is fading. The clothes on your back are your only possessions. Life is just a cyclical daily routine of being in anguish and living with hunger, always looking for your next meal. Now, imagine that you also have 3 children. How do you explain this constant state of misery to them? What do you say to your kids? You can’t assure them that everything will be all right in this world because you are aware of the hand you were dealt. You are an unskilled worker looking for work that does not exist. A life of unmitigated poverty awaits you all. Failure is imminent.
What do you say?
If you are in that position, the only thing you can do (other than trying to better your position) is to provide comfort to your children but how would that be done? What can you offer when your plate is empty? What type of hope can you give when you personally have nothing of value? The only thing that can be done is to provide relief through the use of stories. “Do you know that there is a person more powerful than anyone in this world, who created us and has a wonderful plan for us all?” you may say. “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” – Revelation 21:4″
